How to SEO Optimise your YouTube Channel

How To Optimise YouTube Channel for SEO

Since meeting Emma from BizRocks Magazine on Twitter, I contributed an article which was published in July’s issue.

Here’s a step-by-step simple walkthrough on how to link your website to your YouTube channel, verify ownership, enter your channel keywords and link to your social media accounts.

Channel description

In the text box immediately below the tab bar, you can add a channel description. The maximum length for this section is 1000 characters.

Icon links are featured at the top of your description and use the icon from the social network pages available.  You can have up to four icon links overlayed on your channel art. Custom links appear below your Icon links and can be used to link to anywhere on the web.

The next task is to update your fan base by updating the ‘Discussion’ section as often as you can linking to news articles about your website, you can link anywhere. This automatically shares to Google+ so make the update short and enticing:

Facebook and Twitter

There’s other settings socially to connect, people who update YouTube daily may not want to bombard their Facebook page with every update, however if you update your YouTube channel once a month then I would recommend linking Facebook. Twitter is strongly recommended as this pushes out updates as they happen without you having to change apps.

Be Social with your Hashtags

Remember to share socially when you upload a new video using the pre set icons (above).

Unique Content

YouTube does not like the same video being uploaded to different accounts, so take a look in your Video Manager to ensure your content is unique and provide a central point of reference for your viewers and to ensure everything is under one channel.

Advanced Settings

Here you can name your channel, add your channel keywords and link / verify to your website to prove your ownership.

Tuesday, 8 March 2016 Can't Install Google Analytics / Search Console Doesn't Allow You To Install Google Analytics or Search Console

This article explains the problems I encountered with

I am in the middle of a domain transfer for a client who has had a website hosted on for years. The reason for this is that the domain was of a good age and would pass on strength from the aged domain to the new one on Wordpress which was just a few months old.

All the task required was to verify in Google Search Console (No Google Analytics was needed, besides, it wasn't installed). Review Based On My SEO Research 2016

The following information is an explanation why I personally don't recommend for SEO or to provide site owners data in any format to use for internet marketing purposes.
Basic SEO begins with the installation of Google Analytics and then linking to Google Search Console, then linking the verified website to a Google+ Business page.

Important: None of this is possible with

Google Change Of Address Requires Search Console Verification

There are several ways to verify your website in Google Search Console (GSC), the 2 most popular options are Google Analytics and uploading a HTML Tag.
If your site is built and hosted on then I have bad news for you - it's not possible to Install Google Analytics so you can't verify your site this way. There's no way to add any kind of HTML to the site, there's no 'Source Code' option nor the ability to add code to the of the site
Without the ability to add HTML code to the template builder then logically it follows you can't verify a website in Google Search Console via Google Analytics or by HTML Tag.
The other ways to verify Google Search Console is by HTML file upload (but we can't upload anything) and then there's the Domain Name Provider option, again, not possible as is not listed in the drop down menu in GSC and there's no Cpanel access to add/change a DNS TXT record or by adding a CNAME record.

FAQ for Does Not Mention You Can't Install Google Analytics or Verify in Search Console

Most small businesses are restricted by budget, so a common scenario is to choose a free website building platform like GoDaddy, Wix or and as my freelancing services are chargeable by the hour I try to keep costs low for my clients.
Unfortunately I spent 2 hours reading the blog and FAQ, I even used the 'Search' facility for the keywords "Google Analytics" and there was zero results. To clarify, zero results means that there is NO MENTION ANYWHERE on the website to tell Webmasters that it's not possible to install Google Analytics or verify Search Console.

Support Ticket Response by

First of all, there is no ticketing system - you have to send an email.
This was my first hiccup as this means I can't raise a ticket when logged in, and when I emailed Customer Support from my email account and included the client in the conversation it took 28 hours for them to respond only to tell me they can't help.

Sigh. At this point I've spent 2 hours looking around the help section, writing an email, and a further 28 hour delay before an email came back informing me 

"We kindly ask that you resend your question from the email address that your Simplesite subscription is registered under "

The email request must come from the email address that's registered with

Fair enough - However - I couldn't see this fact in the FAQ and it's not mentioned on their Support page when you are looking for the Customer Services contact details. I feel this should be mentioned to avoid delays in response to questions.

Fine then, I asked my client to email Customer Services from her email, which she did ... guess what? It wasn't received, so I provided evidence that I was copied in to that email. Here's the response:

If you can't view this screenshot for any reason I've copied and pasted the response detailing their reasons for not allowing HTML code on their platform:
Regarding adding HTML:
I am very sorry, but it  is not possible to insert any type of HTML code on your Simplesite and we do not offer FTP access.
It is therefore not possible to add any kind of scripts, widgets, apps or buttons, or upload your own templates or HTML code.

This is because Simplesite is based on predefined online templates that do not allow extra HTML code.

We have designed it in this way so that the Simplesite editing system can be easily used by everyone, even by those who have no knowledge of how to use HTML.

Also it is thereby not possible to add any code that can crash your Simplesite or be potentially harmful to visitors.

But Wait .. There's More!

Our Simplesite website service does not offer FTP access, nor does it give the ability to add or change the site's HTML code. It is therefore not possible to use Google Analytics or Google Webmaster Tools on your Simplesite.

Instead Google will use your menu titles and page titles as keywords.
Please make sure that your titles are as relevant as possible and that your front page contains plenty of good, relevant and updated text.

Use the words that you think people will be searching for as much as you can on your front page - without overdoing it.

It is possible to use Google Adwords with your Simplesite, because Google Adwords does not require that you add any code to your Simplesite.

  • Now, this is true. Google Adwords does not require adding code to a website to run - but this screams very bad business advice to me as you can't install Conversion Tracking.

Conversion Tracking Is Essential in Adwords to Track Your Visitors and Conversions

  • Why spend £300 a month on Adwords without having a method to see how many people called your telephone number, or purchased an item?
  • How do you know how many of your 15 sales / telephone in the last 30 days are as a direct result of paying for traffic in Google Adwords? You could very well be wasting your Adwords budget as you have no idea how many conversions your advertising budget has paid for.
  • You can't connect Adwords with Google Search Console or to Google Analytics because you can't verify ownership, therefore you do not have the ability to make informed marketing decisions based on your visitor activity and interaction / Goals.
Google Adwords Help Article Explains Conversion Tracking - With AdWords conversion tracking, you can see how effectively your ad clicks lead to valuable customer activity, such as website purchases, phone calls, app downloads, newsletter sign-ups and more. Depending on the type of conversion you’re tracking, the setup process is different, so the first step in setting up conversion tracking is choosing a conversion source, or where your conversions come from.

How To Migrate Your Website Away from SimpleSite

  • It's not possible to migrate your website design to another host. The SimpleSite platform is built such a way that you never actually own your website in the sense that you can download a backup copy of your website, and upload to another host.
  • When you leave SimpleSite you can only transfer and take ownership of your domain name. Your website will disappear so if you have images or text articles you want to keep then simply copy and paste the text onto a document and save all of your website images on your desktop / storage drive.

How To Transfer Your Domain Away from SimpleSite

  • Using the email address that you created your SimpleSite account with, email Customer Services and request them to change the IPS tag for you
  • Once they have replied in email that the IPS tag has been changed then you can transfer your domain away to a new host - remember to change your nameservers AFTER the IPS tag has been changed and not before.

In Summary

This project has taken way longer than I would ever anticipate to implement a 301 redirect from an old domain to a new domain and implement a Google Change of Address.
At the time of writing - 08:22am on March 8th 2016 - I'm still waiting for the IPS tag to be changed and we are now on the 8th day of trying to migrate the domain, usually a 20 minute task.

2016 SEO Methods Explained

How Much and How Long Will It Take Me To Get To Google Page 1

These are the 2 most common questions that I get asked several times a week so I decided to write this blog post to give you the same answer I tell everyone.

Do You Really Want To Learn SEO

If you have the time to dedicate learning SEO then I am happy to quote for an SEO training course. As much as I want to I can't summarise my methods to you over the telephone if you want to employ my services.

Explain To Me Your Business

I can't explain to you what SEO involves in 10 minutes, just like you can't explain to me your job, and your daily tasks. I hope this guide helps you understand some points.  

Whatever industry you are in, as a business owner you are busy trying to put food on the table - learning SEO is an ongoing process that's constantly changing as Google evolves, so some of the methods I used in 2009 are no longer effective in 2016.

SEO Methods Explained 

Lesson 1 in SEO - Google Page 1

Nobody can predict how long it will take for your website to get to Google page 1, so your first SEO lesson is to understand I cannot answer this question. I can't even say X weeks or X months or even promise results in X years. Even if you gave me £10,000 the answer will still be the same - I can't answer.

Lesson 2 in SEO - Cost

You can't trick Google so I can't give you a price to guarantee you Google page 1. Refer back to lesson 1. However I can work with you on a regular basis and provide solid SEO services until you do reach Google page 1 - then you stop paying me. Once you get to Google page 1 you will stay there if your website is maintained and updated with fresh content. Your website SEO cost will not be the same as anyone else's as every website is unique.

Lesson 3 in SEO - Quick Results Are Impossible

I decline to quote when a project is passed to me requiring results quickly.

Lesson 4 in SEO - Buying Backlinks from Overseas is BAD

You will 100% require remedial work if you have paid in Dollar$ to an overseas SEO agency. I have yet to meet one company that overseas SEO has helped. 100% of cases that come to me with previous SEO work from a company outside of the UK require extra cost to fix the poor work and damaging methods, usually from foreign directories, blog comments, adding a link to your site from an irrelevant website in Asia, bad neighbourhood ISP's and adult content.

Lesson 5 in SEO - What Do You Do Nina

I'm pleased you've reached this far. I'm happy to tell you what I do and I don't expect you to understand my methods so to help you I have provided links to further reading at the bottom of this article. The more time you have to read these in-depth articles the easier you can learn SEO and the correct ways to promote your website in Google.  

Google Products - Google provides several products and they all should be linked together under one umbrella login. Duplicate Google+ pages should be merged.  

Google Webmaster Tools should be installed into your website and verified using more than one method to increase security, so not only using Google Analytics but also by the Meta Tag method. When using Google Webmaster Tools ensure the correct URL is verified, some websites do not use the 'www' in the URL whilst others use 'https'.  

Google Analytics is an essential addition to every website. Google Analytics provides an in-depth reporting arena for you to learn how people use your website. If you sell online then Google Analytics will show you the path people took to purchase a product. If your website is to convert people into picking up the phone to make a business enquiry, then Google Analytics will tell you how the visitor found your site, what keyphrase was Googled before a contact form message enquiry was sent for example. To see keywords in Google Analytics you need to connect and link to the relevant Google Webmaster Tools property. Add Goals to easily visualise your success. Set up monthly email reports by PDF straight to your inbox.  

Google Analytics - Fake Hits - Referral Traffic Spam Blocking - Sadly every website has spam visits from automatic scripts under Traffic > Referrals. You think you are getting 150 hits a day to your site but in reality 100 of them is due to fake spam bot traffic. I will block all spam referral traffic leaving only accurate visitor data in Analytics.  

Google+ Business Pages and verified in Google Maps, linking your website and 100% profile completion with a link back to your website in the description section of the listing.  

Google Blogger using your Google login which is connected to your Google+ personal profile page. Link the two together. When you blog this is a great way to generate backlinks to your site.  

YouTube is connected to your personal Google+ profile page and this is another source of backlinks in the 'Discussion' tab and the 'About Tab'. You are able to connect Twitter to your YouTube account easily and also add your social URLs to your YouTube profile.  

Social Media profile URLs should be entered into Google Analytics to demonstrate sources of traffic. You will be able to determine how your traffic converts from different channels, such as Direct Traffic, Social Media, Organic and Referrals (other websites backlinking to you).

Rewriting your Home Page for Google will take at least an hour as there's the essential decision of what key words and phrases you want to be found for when people search. Writing for local websites for a local geographical area is much easier than targeting the whole of the UK.  

Rewriting your Landing Page content will take around an hour per page, so when I'm quoting you for a project your website SEO cost will not be the same as anyone else's as every website is unique. I hope you can appreciate the challenges I face when people ask me to pass on my years of SEO knowledge into a 10 minute telephone call and summarise my methods.
